Exceptional gandhara grey schist seated Buddha. The Buddha is depicted here wearing the sanghati – a flowing monastic garment. His hands are placed in a typical position, the right one raised in a gesture of blessing and reassurance, while the left extends along the body, supporting the hem of the garment. Both the transparency of the clothing and the modeling of the body is characteristic of the Gandharan style of the latter part of the second to third century AD. The Buddha has elongated ear-lobes, a reference to his early life as a prince, when he wore heavy gold earrings; his eyes are lowered in meditation. His wavy hair is lightly carried up to the top of the head and arranged in a large ushnisha, the Buddhist topknot symbolizing wisdom. Includes authenticity certificate from David Aaron Ancient Art. | Gandharan, Pakistán. 2nd – early 3rd Century A. D.
