Gandharan Schist Architectural Fragment w/ Leafy Motif

Ancient Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. A beautiful fragment of an architectural element that is hand-carved from silvery gray schist. Rectangular in form, this fragment presents a series of 3 leaves with delineated veins and peripheral serrations, all in the foreground of a larger leaf that radiates upwards within the background. Atop the fragment is a pair of carved-out mortises for attaching to a larger series of carved reliefs. Size: 3.125" L x 5.2" W x 3.6" H (7.9 cm x 13.2 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: This is a fragment of a larger composition as shown. Chips and small losses to peripheries of some leaves, with softening to some finer incised details, and light encrustations. Great preservation to foliage forms and attachment mortises on top.
