Gardner/Kuznetsov - cup and saucer, Russia, ca. 1880
Gardner / Kuznetsov – cup and saucer, Russia, late 19th–early 20th century
A decorative porcelain set consisting of a cup and saucer, made at the renowned Russian porcelain manufactory Gardner (Гарднер), located in Verbilki near Moscow, which was taken over in 1891 by Matvey Kuznetsov’s (Кузнецов) company.
The cup has a delicately contoured body, set on a small foot, with a decoratively shaped handle. The saucer is deep, with a wide, wavy rim.
The surfaces of both pieces are adorned with a hand-painted floral composition depicting white, multi-petaled flowers, green leaves, and subtle burgundy twigs. The decoration is set against a striking, shaded background that transitions from creamy white through shades of beige to olive green and golden brown. The rims of the cup and saucer are accented with delicate gilding.
The bottoms of both pieces bear the Gardner manufactory’s red marks, depicting the Russian double-headed imperial eagle and an oval emblem with Cyrillic inscriptions referring to the Moscow porcelain factory. The decorator’s number “252” is also visible on the bottom of the cup.
The Gardner PorcelainManufactory, founded in 1766 by Francis Gardner, was one of the most highly regarded Russian porcelain manufacturers. Its products were distinguished by their high quality of craftsmanship and a rich repertoire of decorations. In 1891, the factory was purchased by Matvey Kuznetsov and incorporated into his extensive ceramics enterprise, though the historic Gardner markings continued to be used.
This set is an interesting example of Russian decorative porcelain from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining the traditions of the Gardner manufactory with those of the Kuznetsov enterprise.
