Description
Verbruggen’s magnificent garlands of flowers, which he often let flow from stone vases and usually enlivened with allegorical female figures, are a further development of the genre invented by Jan Brueghel the Elder at the beginning of the 17th century. Fred G. Meijer dates the creation of the present painting to the 1690s, thus to the Antwerp creative period of the great flower painter. Although Verbruggen usually had his figures painted in his pictures by figure painter friends, according to Ertz, he seems to have painted the young woman and the putto in the style of Peter Ykens (1648 – Antwerp – 1695) himself. They blend harmoniously with the flowers painted with a broad brush, in which the influence of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer can be seen.
With a written certificate and a photo expertise by Dr Klaus Ertz, Lingen, dated 24.3.2022.
