Gaspare Diziani - A bacchanal with Pan and the Triumph of Silenus
Gaspare Diziani
A bacchanal with Pan and the Triumph of Silenus
Oil on canvas. 54.1 x 78 cm.
Early in his career, Gaspare Diziani moved from Belluno to Venice, where he was admitted in Sebastiano Ricci's workshop; in the 1710s, he worked for Augustus the Strong in Dresden and shortly in Munich, returning in 1720 to the Serenissima, where he undertook a number of secular and religious cycles and established himself as a successful painter. After Giambattista Tiepolo's departure from Venice in 1750, Diziani assumed a leading position in the art scene and in 1755 he was a co-founder of the Accademia, which he served as president of from 1760–1762 and in 1766.
The present work shows clear references to Sebastiano Ricci and is executed in the artist’s typically fluid brushstrokes, bright palette, and confident technique.
