Gasparo Lopez - Two Flower Still Lifes in Landscapes
Gasparo Lopez
Two Flower Still Lifes in Landscapes
Oil on canvas (relined). Each 60 x 43 cm.
Gasparo López, also known as Gasparo di Fiori, was a member of the important school of Neapolitan still life painters inspired by Paolo Porpora, Giovanni Battista Rouppolo and Andrea Belvedere, under whom López was taught to paint. The sheer number and richness of the flowers in his compositions do credit to his nickname “di Fiore”. Roses, tulips, snowball flowers, carnations, hollyhocks and all manner of other blooms not only fill the vases but spill out onto the plinth and cover the floor. We would like to thank Dr Fred G. Meijer for confirming the authenticity of these works based on photographs.
Provenance
In a Dutch private collection since the 1960s.
