Gasparo Lopez
Attributed to. A rich flower still life with a lemon and pomegranate with a landscape beyond. Oil on relined canvas, 62 x 92.5 cm.
The attribution has been kindly suggested by Fred Meijer on the basis of a photograph. Compare with the pair of still lifes of which one has been noted by Federico Zeri as signed, offered at Christie’s London, 6 April 1984, lot 41. Gasparo Lopez was probably born in Naples and studied with Andrea Belvedere. In 1717 he inscribed in the local guild of painters, but soon left his home town to travel north where he would have considerable success, among others by members of the Medici family in Florence. His compositions are characterized by the exuberant of the flowers and the use of landscape backgrounds.
