Author: Gass, Patrick
Title: Journal of the Voyages and Travels of a Corps of Discovery, under the command of Capt. Lewis and Capt. Clarke of the army of the United States, from the mouth of the River Missouri through the interior parts of North America to the Pacific Ocean During the Years 1804, 1805 & 1806...
Place Published: Philadelphia
Publisher:Mathew Carey
Date Published: 1811
Description:

viii, [2], [11]-262 pp. Illustrated with 6 copper-engraved plates. 16.8x10 cm (6½x4"), period sheep, morocco spine label. Third Edition.

Lacking half-title and page 12 as well as pages 88-92, which have been replaced with facsimiles. Gass's Journal was the first detailed account by a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to be published. This third edition has the same plates, imprint and pagination of the 1810 second edition, which was the first published account of the expedition to have illustrations. The artist is unknown but obviously was unprofessional and unfamiliar with most aspects of the expedition; still, the illustration are imbued with primitive charm, and helped form the public's impression of the Transmississippi West and the expedition. Graff 1520; Howes G77; Wagner-Camp 6:6.
Condition Report: Covers scuffed and worn, spine inexpertly repaired with non-archival tape; contents evenly tanned, foxing and occasional soiling throughout; generally good and worthy of repair.
