Gavin Turk, British b.1967- Car Boot (Vauxhaull Nova SRI), 2007; steel car boot in white, signed and dated in red ink to rear window, with GT sticker, a unique work from a series of 13 Car Boots produced for The Art Car Boot Fair, 2007, Truman Brewery, London, 130x90x15cm (ARR) Provenance: Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair, Brick Lane, London, 2007, where purchased by the present owner. Exhibition: Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair, Brick Lane, London, 2007 Note: The Art Car Boot Fair, a twist on the traditional English car boot fair, allows artists to sell works from the boot of a car. Turk used the brief literally and chose to sell a collection of thirteen second-hand car boots signed and dated in flamboyant ink. Cars as a symbol of class, social status and wealth, become a null object when material parts are divided and hung as empty symbols.
