Gebel Kamil Meteorite Iron, ungrouped Al Wadi al Jadid, Egypt - (22° 1' 6"N, 26° 5' 16"E) Found: 2009 The Gebel Kamil variety of meteorite is well-known to collectors for numerous reasons, and this complete individual specimen is outstanding in its own right. While a much more solid and thick example than many of the more "shrapnel" pieces of the variety, this sizable brown mass with a considerable weight of 664 grams features a wonderful, and textural, crust over a majority of the complex surface. Thought to have originated from the core of a smaller asteroid that broke apart before crashing to Earth, Gebel Kamil is of major scientific interest, as it provides insight into the origin of the early solar system, and collectors prize such material for the rarity and appearance. First discovered in Egypt, back in 2009, this meteorite is believed to have fallen 5,000 years ago. This specimen of Gebel Kamil certainly checks a lot of boxes and has a seriously inflated shape. Measurements: 3.56 x 2.55 x 1.98 inches (9.05 x 6.48 x 5.04 cm), weighs 664 grams HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
