Gego (German-born Venezuelan, 1912-1994), Untitled, 1966 Lithograph

Gego (German-born Venezuelan, 1912–1994), born Gertrud Goldschmidt, trained as an architect and engineer in Stuttgart before fleeing and settling in Venezuela in 1939. She began her artistic career during the 1950s and developed a practice centered on line drawn on paper, printed, or constructed in wire and suspended in space. In contrast to the precise geometry associated with Venezuelan Kinetic art, Gego favored irregular, hand-built networks in which lines bend, overlap, and shift with the viewer’s position. Her work is represented in major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and Tate.

Untitled is a 1966 stone lithograph in black on white Nacre paper, printed by Maurice Sanchez and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. Broad horizontal textures cover most of the sheet, interrupted by an irregular white central form, long crossing diagonals, and rows of short linear marks resembling an open framework or ladder. Inscribed “TAM. IMP. gego 66” in pencil lower right, identifying this as one of nine Tamarind impressions outside the numbered edition of 20; with the Tamarind and Maurice Sanchez blindstamps on the verso. Sheet measures approximately 11 × 11 inches. Condition appears good overall, with mild toning and handling wear and remnants of previous hinging at the upper verso; otherwise presenting with a strong impression. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
