Gene Kloss was an American artist whose oil paintings and watercolors reveal a deep connection to the landscapes and people of the Southwest. Born in Oakland, California, she studied art at the University of California, Berkeley, and other Bay Area schools before first visiting New Mexico in 1925. The region became a lifelong inspiration, particularly its mountains, changing light, and Pueblo communities. Her paintings combine strong composition with sensitive contrasts of light and shadow, capturing both the grandeur and quiet atmosphere of the land. While known as a brilliant printmaker, works such as Ceremonial Banner demonstrate her expressive abilities as a painter and her belief in direct experience of nature as essential to art.
