Gene Sterling Spanish Conquistador Oil

This mid-century oil painting on textured board depicts a Spanish conquistador in a dramatic, expressive style. The subject is shown from the waist up, wearing a morion helmet adorned with a large yellow plume, a dark breastplate or sash over an orange-slashed doublet, and a hand resting on a sword hilt. The work features heavy impasto and energetic brushwork, with vertical striations throughout the dark green and bright yellow background. The painting is signed gene sterling in lowercase and cursive script in the lower-left corner. It is housed in an ornate carved wood frame with a gilded finish and a narrow red inner liner. The verso is covered in brown paper backing which has been hand-marked in red ink with MW77-3031R, CB5337-771, and CONQUISTADOR. A price of 5.00 is written in pencil on the paper backing. 33x44
