A 20th-century Austrian painter and graphic artist. Born in Vienna in 1928 to the composer Hanns Eisler and his wife Charlotte Eisler, he emigrated with his family to Moscow in 1936 and subsequently to England in 1938. There, he was mentored by Oskar Kokoschka; he returned to Vienna in 1946 and attended evening life-drawing classes taught by Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts. Eisler continued to divide his time between Vienna and England, creating portraits of associates such as Helmut Qualtinger, Erich Fried, and Ernst Fischer, as well as scenes from coffeehouses and depictions of demonstrations. His expressive, figurative painting belongs to the realm of post-war modernism, combining influences from Kokoschka and Boeckl with a distinctly socially critical perspective. His work focuses on the individual within the crowd, street clashes, political demonstrations, and memories of flight and exile. In this regard, his work can be linked to artists such as Alfred Hrdlicka, Rudolf Schönwald, and Fritz Martinz, who—in various ways—represent a socially engaged, expressive, and figurative strain of Austrian art in the post-1945 era. Eisler’s work falls within the context of exile art, political figuration, and the Viennese coffeehouse scene; pieces by the artist are also held in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna.
