George Ames Aldrich (American, 1872-1941)

Le Madeleine-River Canche, Normandy, France
Signed "G. Ames Aldrich" lower right, identified on a presentation plaque.
Oil on board, 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.5 cm), in a period frame.
Condition: Fine stable craquelure, some very minor areas of fluorescence along the perimeter of the composition, most of which appears to be natural pigment fluorescence.

Provenance: Presented to The Hamilton Club by Colonel Charles F.H. Johnson, Passaic, New Jersey, December 1921 (as recorded on the presentation plaque); through to Eckert Fine Art, Indianapolis, Indiana; purchased by a private Indianapolis collector in October 1989; through to the current owner.

N.B. Colonel Charles F.H. Johnson was the aide to General Walter K. Wilson, director of Army Emergency Relief. Colonel Johnson was a Major in the air service during World War I and returned to service during World War II.

The painting is accompanied by a color photocopy of an appraisal from Eckert Fine Art dated October, 1989.
Estimate $3,000-5,000

Framed dimensions are 30 x 36 x 2 inches.

Frame inscribed in marker, "C11-29/HFAL."

Slight bowing to the support. The texture of the paint surface is more "pebbly" in the lower left corner and along the bottom edge, but this does not seem out of keeping with the aesthetic and may be alligatoring. There is some old retouch along the bottom center edge. Varnish inconsistencies along the bottom edge, including possible masking varnish.

Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
