George Baker (1915-1975)

[ translate ]

George Baker Sad Sack and the Sarge #48 Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1965). Here is a classic example of the Sad Sack franchise's style of slapstick disaster. Baker had originated Sad Sack, the cartoon chronicle of a hard-luck Army Private, while serving in uniform during World War II. The property spread from Yank, the Army Weekly into hardcover books, newspaper strips, and radio comedy. It enjoyed its most extensive run at Harvey Comics, beginning in 1949 and continuing into the 1980s. Sad Sack (left) is usually the butt of the jokes, but here the joke is on recurring character Sergeant Circle (pictured, center). The keg at right is labeled as "Root Beer" -- a pre-emptive sop to the censor-driven Comics Code Authority. Signed by Baker at left. An intact reading copy of the issue is included. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 11.5" x 13.25". Excellent condition. HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
