MARCUS RENO, Union Officer; Major Of The 7th Cavalry Under George Custer.
Clipped Signature, "M.A. Reno," on a small piece of paper affixed to a 1.5" x 2.5" card, no date, no place, Very Fine, laid onto matte, along with a photocopy of an image of Reno and a printed informational card, matted to an overall size of 16" x 13.5". This historic "Marcus Reno" signed card brought $1,150 in our EAHA Auction in 1998.
After graduating from West Point, Reno served in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. After the war, he became Major of the 7th Cavalry, served at Fort Hays, Kansas, and was then stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln, North Dakota, where he accompanied George A. Custer on the Sioux Expedition of 1876. His role in the Battle of the Little Big Horn is perhaps more controversial than that of any other individual. A desirable Custer-related signature.
Reno's claim to fame (or infamy) lies with the Battle of the Little Big Horn, as Major of the 7th Cavalry under General George Custer, and what he did or did not do. On June 25, 1876, when Custer divided his regiment into three battalions, Major Reno was assigned Companies A, G, and M. In the charges and countercharges which were made in an attempt to place responsibility for the massacre, Reno was accused of cowardice in his actions in the charge toward the village and the retreat across the Little Big Horn. He requested a Court of Inquiry, which was held in 1879, and he was acquitted. His dismissal in 1880 was for "other causes."
