Biography: George Yater, who was graduated from the John Herron Art school in 1932, has begun to build the traditional artist?s ladder with good strong rungs, judging from the highly commendatory reviews by art critics that were published in four New York newspapers on the occasion of the young Hoosiers first one-man show of water color paintings in the Eastern metropolis. A scholarship of $350 from the Herron school was given to Mr. Yater for study in the East, when awards were announced at commencement time, and in the summer of 1932 he went to the popular Cape Cod painting field at Provincetown, Mass. - made famous many years ago by Charles W. Hawthorne - where he has continued to paint in a medium so well suited to coast scenes and marine subjects. Charles Yeager, teacher of art at Emmerich Manual Training High School, who also specializes in water color painting, and Maurice Gardner, who is winning recognition in art circles of California, were graduated from the Herron school in the same class with Mr. later. The annual exhibitions of Indiana art at the Herron Art Museum have included noteworthy examples of work by Mr. Yater. At the Hoosier Salon, last winter, he was aware an honorable mention on the Still-Life Painter, one of two water colors that were accepted by the jury for the big Chicago show. The picture was included in the recent New York exhibit.
