A note affixed to the reverse from the George Demont Otis Foundation states that the present work was painted in the early 1920s at the Charles Lummis home on the road to Pasadena. This was a center for artists, authors, and civic leaders. Lummis wrote and published articles of historic interest and did much to promote culture in Southern California. Otis was a welcome guest at the Lummis center where a grove of Sycamores grew in the canyon.
