George F. Campbell RHA,
Irish 1917-1974 -

Market Scene;

watercolour and gouache on paper, signed lower right 'Campbell', 26.5 x 39.8 cm (unframed) (ARR)

Provenance:
Sotheby's, London, 20th Century British and Irish Art, Including works from the studio of Cyril Mann, 16th February 2005, lot 160;
private collection

Note:
Campbell was from a circle of Post-War Irish artists that included Gerald Dillon, Noreen Rice and his mother Gretta Bowen. The present work reflects the cubist-inspired style that was prevalent in Britain and Ireland in the period, seen here in the simplified and overlapping figures and flat planes of pure colour, reminiscent of John Minton and John Craxton.

Campbell exhibited with Victor Waddington in Dublin and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
