GEORGE HAMILTON (1934-2019)

When asked about his art, George Hamilton says, "I prefer to show the whimsical side of life, with imaginative use of color and design. The bulk of my work consists of elegant, whimsy ladies, cats, and still life paintings." Most of his works are acrylic on canvas or paper. George's use of brilliant color and sumptuous forms lead the viewer into a compelling world of these whimsical ladies, indolent felines and sultry afternoons. His love of music, particularly jazz, is evident in his rhythmic brush strokes as well as the frequent use of pianos, cellos and other musical instruments as subject matter.

Born in l934 in Pittsfield, Mass. Hamilton attended the Chounard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California and spent five years in Japan, where he met his wife, Satsuko, studying art and calligraphy. The recipient of numerous awards, George has appeared in over sixty, One Man Exhibits including shows at the American Watercolor Society in New York, the Portland Art Museum, Museum of Art, Casper, Wyoming, the Frye Art Museum and the Seattle Art Museum in Washington, and the University of Oregon Museum of Art. For many years, George taught workshops in Portland, the Universities of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, Boise State College, the Watercolor Societies of Oregon, Hawaii, and Washington. He hopes his paintings will bring joy, happiness and fun into the lives of his numerous collectors.
