Note:
Breitner was an important Dutch Impressionist painter, engraver and photographer, depicting the streets and life of Amsterdam. He considered himself a people's painter, often capturing the same scene in different weather conditions. In 1882, he met Vincent Van Gogh through his brother Theo, and the two would sketch the working class district of the Hague together. He also painted with Isaac Israels, which was explored in a recent exhibition at the Kunstmuseum den Haag, 'Breitner vs Israels'.
His works are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, including sketches and a photograph of the Nieuwmarkt, as well as the British Museum.
