Provenance: Property from the Estate of Ruth Harvey, Bel Air, California.
Footnote: The downswept arms and cabriole legs ending in scroll toes of this open armchair relate to a design for a French Chair pattern published by Thomas Chippendale in the third edition of his Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker s Director, 1762, pl. XIX. The leg design closely relates to a suite of seat furniture supplied in 1757 by cabinet-maker and upholsterer Paul Saunders for Holkham Hall, Norfolk. Saunders provided a set of twelve side chairs, six armchairs and two settees, described on a 11 June 1757 invoice by Messrs. Saunders and Bradshaw (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, p. 211, figs. 378-379). The wavy outlines of the frame match a pair of chairs in the manner of Paul Saunders, formerly in the collection of Sir William Garthwaite, Bt, sold Christie s London, 3 November 2011, lot 60.
Condition Report: Structurally sound. Well carved. General marks, nicks, scratches, rubbing, wear and dirt accumulation overall. Refinished. Later finish flaking off. With wear to feet. Losses to brackets. Underside re-blocked Soiling and tears to upholstery. Lacking casters.
