George Leslie Hunter (1877 - 1931) Scotland
Oil on Canvas
Measure 15 1/2"in H x 19 1/2"in W and 19"in H x 23"in W with frame

Known for: Landscape, still life painting, scenes of France, prints, illustration
Biography: Born in Rothesay, Scotland on Aug. 7, 1877, Hunter left his native land at age 15 and moved to California where his father had large land holdings. There he pursued an art career, and became friends with writers Will Irwin and Jack London. Primarily a self-taught artist and "a compulsive draftsman," he learned to make monotypes from Piazzoni and Martinez. In San Francisco he maintained a studio at 610 Montgomery where he painted and illustrated. In April 1906 his first one-man show was hung at the Mark Hopkins Institute when, on the eve of its opening, the earthquake and fire destroyed all of his pictures. Hunter then returned to Glasgow, worked as an illustrator until 1914, and died there on Dec. 7, 1931. His rare paintings include still lives, landscapes, and scenes of France.
