George Morland,
British 1763-1804-

A horse and rider in a stream, an extensive landscape beyond;

oil on canvas, signed G. Morland (lower left), 63.4 x 76.5 cm.

Note:
Morland's landscapes generally bear the influence of several 17th-century Dutch artists, including Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) and Meindert Hobbema (1638-1709). Typical of his style, the present work features a lone, rustic figure and horse in an otherwise empty landscape, the bright colours of the figure's clothing setting him apart from the muted palette of his surroundings. The emptiness of the scene creates a sense of peace and tranquility, romanticising the rural existence with which Morland was so preoccupied.
