George R.R. Martin (b. 1948)

Fevre Dream. Inscribed Revised Typescript, with a TLS, ARC, and First Edition.

New York: Poseidon Press, 1982.

Original typescript, the setting copy, with copious corrections and revisions by the copyeditor in pencil and ink throughout, retaining several paragraphs subsequently revised or removed altogether from the first edition text, annotated for casting off into galleys, with Martin's authentic fading ribbon to a number of leaves; signed and inscribed by the author to Jack Hollfelder, "Hoping your own voyages will be somewhat less dark than this one—keep on reading" in black felt tip marker on the leaf bearing the proposed spine text; together 461 pp., housed in a cardboard box; 11 x 8 ½ in.

[With] Typed letter signed by Martin in black ink to Jack Hollfelder in which he lists material relating to his early projects for sale including the present typescript for Fevre Dream as well as xerox copies and typescripts of his short stories and novels such as Windhaven (1981) and Dying of the Light (1977); 2 pp., laid in with typescript; 11 x 8 ½ in.

[And] Fevre Dream. New York: Poseidon Press, 1982. Advance uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, octavo; bound in blue wrappers printed in black (creasing; wrapper with areas of sunning); 8 ¼ x 5 ½ in.

[And] First edition, octavo; signed and inscribed by the author to Hollfelder in black felt tip, "Good talking to you—keep your steam up", dated February 27, 1984, on the title page; bound in publisher's red cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in silver, red endpapers; in the unclipped pictorial jacket featuring an eerie illustration of the ship Fevre Dream by Baron Storey (minor edge wear to jacket, a single tiny tear to spine panel head; lower corners very lightly bumped); 9 ¼ x 6 in.

"Morn came and went—and came, and brought no day,
And men forgot their passions in the dread
Of this their desolation…" – Lord Byron, "Darkness."

Called upon by a mysterious, pale gentleman named Joshua York, Captain Abner Marsh builds one of the greatest steamers to ever grace the Mississippi River. The only problem is that his patron has a secret, one that Abner Marsh cannot ignore. What follows is a violent Southern Gothic, rife with vampires, thralls, and river men basking in the chaos and depravity of the Antebellum south. The Captain and York find themselves at the center, desperately clinging to their humanity as they face pure malice in the form of suave, despicable blood master Damon Julien.

The present lot provides a fantastic opportunity to witness Martin's writing process—to see his characters develop, plot devices evolve, and the journey from typescript to finished first edition. Many of the character types in Fevre Dream later appear in his masterpiece A Song of Ice and Fire, the basis for the hit TV series Game of Thrones. For example, protagonist Captain Abner Marsh bears similarities to Eddard Stark: a fair, generous leader who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and enact justice, even if it kills him. Although Fevre Dream is one of Martin's lesser-known works, it has been aptly described as "Bram Stoker meets Mark Twain," and won both the Locus and World Fantasy Award in 1983. It is an underappreciated gem of vampire fiction, showcasing George R.R. Martin's remarkable command of both fantasy and horror writing.

From the Collection of Jack Hollfelder.
