George Ridpath (d. 1726)

The Stage Condemn'd.

London: Printed for John Salusbury, 1698.

First edition, octavo; bound in attractive contemporary English speckled calf with blind ruling; neatly rebacked; ex libris a member of the White family of Tuxford with round White Wallingwells armorial bookplate inside front board; 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.

Wing R-1468; ESTC R17141.

Ridpath was a Scottish firebrand journalist and Whig whose scandalous articles got him thrown into Newgate Prison in the early part of the 18th century. In this work, published anonymously, he supports that of Puritan drama-hater Jeremy Collier. The Stage Condemn'd was subsequently rebutted in The Stage Acquitted, and Ridpath was outed by name as "the formidable author of a scandalous newspaper, and the wretched retailer of mad Prynne's enthusiastic cant."
