George Schalk Muzzleloading Percussion Target Rifle in 40 Caliber
Made by George Schalk of Pottsville, Pennsylvania circa 1861. Schalk is well known for quality rifles and influence on later makers like H.M. Pope. Rifle has blued 1-1/2" wide octagon 31" long rifled 40 caliber barrel fitted with Schalk made false muzzle, steady rest and brass globe front sight with missing rear and tang sight. Barrel is marked "G. Schalk Pottsville" with nickel plated ramrod keeper with original hardwood ramrod and patent breech. Unmarked back action percussion lock with double set trigger control. Schalk walnut right hand cheekpiece checkered stock with nickel finished engraved Schuetzen buttplate with fancy nickel plated finger lever trigger guard. Nickel plated tang with thumb screw sight base (missing sight). A superb quality early target rifle. LOP: 13-1/4". CALIBER/GA: 40. FFL: Antique.
Condition
Barrel has some scaling with some areas showing some oxidation and finish loss. Nickel parts have been cleaned with stock cleaned and checkering freshened. Good strong bore in need of aggressive cleaning with functioning mechanics.
