George Segal
1924 - 2000

Woman on a Church Pew
plaster, paper and wooden pew
48 by 56½ by 23½ in.
121.9 by 143.5 by 59.7 cm.
Executed in 1964.

Condition Report:
This work is in very good and sound condition overall. There are scattered scratches, scuffs and chips to the wooden church pew, inherent to its found nature. Upon close inspection, there is a 1 inch yellow accretion on the figure's right shoulder blade and a minor ½ inch loss to the figure’s right forearm. A light layer of dust has settled and slightly discolored the surface and the crevices, most notably on the figure’s lap. All other surface irregularities are inherent to the artist’s chosen medium and artistic intent. Upon further close inspection, there are two minor tears, ½ inch and ¼ inch respectively, to the lower right edge of the paper and a minute drip accretion near the lower right corner.

Provenance:
Collection of the artist
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Woman's Board of the Museum of Contemporary Art Benefit Auction, 1 November 1968, lot 27 (donated by the above)
Acquired from the above by the present owner
