George Simenon Lot of (2) SPs
SPs
Two presentation photographs of Belgian writer Georges Simenon (1903-1989), each signed by him as "Georges Simenon." 1986. N.p. but probably Lausanne, Switzerland. The sepia-colored glossy photo reprints were printed on Kodak photo paper. Expected surface wear including scattered negligible scuffs and isolated blunted corners. The photograph of Simenon in the vegetable market may have previously been exposed to slight moisture, as there is some surface patterning towards the left side, mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 5" x 7" and 7" x 5".
The landscape photograph is signed and inscribed by Simenon as: "To Irene Hughes, / with personal regards / Georges Simenon / 1986." The vertical photograph is signed and inscribed by Simenon as: "To Irene / Hughes, / with warm [sic] / Georges Simenon / 1986"
Both photos recall wonderful aspects of Simenon's most beloved fictional character, Parisian chief inspector Jules Maigret, who populates no fewer than 28 short stories and 75 novels written by Simenon between 1930 and his retirement in the early 1970s. Many of Maigret's crime-solving capers take place in French-speaking urban centers in Europe, where vegetable markets such as the one in this photo could be found. Like his gruff and surly detective Maigret, Simenon frequently puffed on tobacco pipes kept ever-ready in overcoat pockets.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
