George V 1928 P Gold Sovereign NGC MS 63
AUSTRALIA. George V, 1910-36.
Gold Sovereign, 1928 P. Perth.
Bare head left, B.M. on truncation; GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP:. / St George on horseback slaying the dragon right; mintmark P in groundline; date and B.P. in exergue. Edge milled.
The 1928 Perth sovereign marks the end of the original portrait series introduced at the beginning of George V’s reign. Bertram Mackennal’s first, larger effigy of the King had appeared upon the sovereign since 1911; from 1929 it was replaced at Perth by a smaller, modified portrait intended to improve the striking of the coin.
Mackennal’s portrait was paired with Benedetto Pistrucci’s enduring St George and the Dragon, with the small ‘P’ in the groundline identifying its production in Western Australia. A little over 1.3 million examples were struck, a considerably smaller output than Perth had produced during many of the preceding years.
The issue is especially difficult to obtain in superior Mint State condition. Graded NGC MS63, the present coin is one of only fourteen examples recorded at this level, with just five certified finer, placing it among the nineteen finest graded by NGC.
In secure plastic holder, graded NGC MS 63 , certification number 6692981-010.
