George VI 1937 Gold 5 Pounds (5 Sovereigns) Proof NGC PF 62 CAMEO

[ translate ]

UNITED KINGDOM. George VI, 1936-52.
Gold 5 Pounds (5 Sovereigns), 1937. Royal Mint. Proof.
Bare head of King George VI facing left; GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP around. Design by Thomas Humphrey Paget. / St. George on horseback rearing right; dragon below with a broken lance in its chest; date and B.P. in exergue. Design by Benedetto Pistrucci. Edge plain.

The five-sovereign piece was the largest and most prestigious denomination included in the four-coin gold proof set issued for the coronation of George VI. It provided the most imposing canvas for the designs selected for the new King’s coinage.

For this design, Thomas Humphrey Paget’s restrained bare-headed portrait was paired with Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the Dragon. Pistrucci’s design had first appeared upon a five-pound piece in 1820, and its scale and dramatic modelling were particularly well suited to the broad flan. As with the other denominations in the Coronation set, the plain edge identified its special proof status.

Only 5,501 examples were produced, making this the sole five-sovereign piece issued during the reign of George VI. Although a handful of pieces were struck for official purposes under Elizabeth II in 1953 and 1957, the denomination was not made available to collectors again until 1980, a gap of forty-three years.
