George VI 1946 Silver Shilling Scottish Proof NGC PF 62 - Exceptionally Rare, R7 in Bull
UNITED KINGDOM. George VI, 1936-52.
Silver Shilling, 1946. Royal Mint. Proof.
Obv: GEORGIVS VI D G: BR: OMN: REX., bare head of King George VI facing left; H.P. on truncation, legend around. Design by Thomas Humphrey Paget. Rev: FID: DEF: IND: IMP: above; ONE SHILLING below. Crowned Scottish lion facing, holding sword and sceptre, standing on St Edward's crown (the 'Royal crest'); date and two shields split to sides of crown. Design by George Kruger Gray. Edge milled.
An exceptionally rare Proof striking of the 1946 Scottish reverse Shilling, pairing Thomas Humphrey Paget’s portrait of George VI with George Kruger Gray’s crowned lion holding a sword and sceptre. The Scottish design provides a distinctive counterpart to the English reverse issued alongside it, while the 1946 date marks the final year of Britain’s circulating silver coinage before the introduction of cupronickel in 1947.
Listed as “untraced” in Bull’s English Silver Coinage and assigned an R7 rarity rating, this Proof issue remains exceptionally elusive. Just two examples have been identified by the cataloguer, offering collectors an important opportunity to acquire a special striking whose existence was acknowledged in the reference but for which no specimen had been traced.
Graded NGC PF62, the present coin is the sole example recorded at this level, with only one certified finer. Its rarity gives it particular importance for collectors of George VI’s Proof coinage and those seeking the unusual special issues produced outside the familiar public Proof sets.
In secure plastic holder, graded NGC PF 62 , certification number 5879454-010.
