George Washington Signed Partial Ship's Passport - Bound For British West Indies!
Partially printed DS

A partial, three language ship's passport signed by the president, "Go: Washington", and countersigned by Edmund Randolph as Secretary of State. 1p, measuring 13" x 10.5", Portsmouth, NH, February 4, 1796. The document permits Henry Tredick, master of the Brig Drake, "bound for the West Indies and laden with lumber, fish, beef, butter, cheese, candles, Indian corn & meal and peas…" to depart from Portsmouth. Countersigned by customs collector Joseph Whipple in the bottom margin. Printed in French, English, and Dutch, with a blind embossed seal of the United States at the lower left. Uneven toning and offsetting throughout; trimmed at the bottom edge, cutting off the lower portion of text. Flattened folds, two passing through Washington's signature. Edges exhibit intermittent chipping and small tears. Boldly signed by all. Mounted and displayed to an overall size of 29.5" x 17".

Captain Henry Tredick (1766-1815) was a prosperous ship owner, mariner, and importer from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Under his command, the brig Drake was scheduled to depart in April to British-controlled Martinique, which was recaptured from the French in 1794. Just prior to Britain's invasion, the French National Convention issued a decree to abolish slavery on the island, but the transmission was intercepted by British forces before it could be implemented. This, in turn, precipitated the signing of the Jay Treaty in November 1794, which granted the U.S. limited trade in the British West Indies.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
