George Washington Success Medal Issued to Commemorate his Inauguration

[ translate ]

Brass token, 26mm, GW 1792-1. Obverse inscription around "GEORGE WASHINGTON" bust in uniform facing right. Verso inscription around "SUCCESS TO THE UNITED STATES" with star, enclosing an eye surrounded by diverging rays, with fifteen alternate stars. Small die break between "I" and "N" in Washington. Fine condition. Success medals have origins lost in time today. Their use of 15 stars and the phrase SUCCESS TO THE UNITED STATES suggest a possible time and origin contemporaneous with the Conder tokens of late 19th century Britain, sometime between 1791 and 1796--could these have been struck at Birmingham's Soho Mint? However, they lack the normal denomination and design influences of those pieces.
