Georges Braque (1882-1963) Greeting Card

[ translate ]

Watercolor and black ink on fine quality wove paper, hand-drawn greeting card, "Mes Bons Voeux" (My Good Wishes), signed* and dated 1959. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Very good condition. Unframed.

Provenance: Acquired by the current owner's family in France, circa 1970-1980, from Simone Girard. At the time the pieces were acquired, Simone Girard told the consignor's family that she and her husband, Jean, had been friends and neighbors of Fernand Mourlot, Georges Braque's print publisher. The consignor recalls that the Girards lived with Simone's parents and subsequently met and became friendly with Braque; the artist sent these greeting cards to the Girards and to Simone's parents over the course of several years. The consignor remembers that at least some of the cards were kept with their original mailing envelopes, which were discarded when the pieces were framed.
