CATALOGUE NOTE: Dijon-born sculptor Diebolt studied at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts under Jules Ramey and Augustin Dumont. He received several honours and awards during his lifetime, including the 1841 Prix de Rome for a classically inspired relief depicting the Death of Demosthenes. He is primarily known for his public commissions, including his large sculptures for the Pont de lAlma in Paris, one of which remains in place today
