[ translate ]

A two-piece Georgian period mahogany secretary bookcase in the Hepplewhite style, circa first quarter 19th century. The top piece, a bookcase has two turned finials present, two mullioned glass doors encasing three shelves, above two side-by-side drawers. The bottom piece, a secretary desk with a fold-out slanted writing surface supported by two slide-out rails, above two drawers, raised on four reeded legs. Across the piece are fine string and checker inlays. The hardware, period brasses presumably original to the piece, including four wonderful oval Hepplewhite bail pulls with a thistle motif similar to a set adorning a 1780 sideboard pictured in Albert Sack's Fine Points of Furniture.

Affixed to the desk underneath the bookcase top is a 19th century parcel tag that reads "[WW Lund?] Lincoln Street, Hingham Mass. Howe & Co. Express."

Measures 76" x 40" x 19".
Condition Report: Structurally the piece is very solid. No center finial is present. The right front corner of the fold-out writing surface has a loss of a block of wood (about 1" x 1"), which is present and may be re-attached. The writing surface itself is black felt, which has been replaced at some time. The bottom front apron is missing about half of its inlaid trim.
