Gerald Laing (British, 1936-2011), Pile, 1965 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Gerald Laing (1936-2011) was a British painter and sculptor who emerged as an important figure in early British Pop Art while studying at St Martin’s School of Art in London. His paintings and prints of the early 1960s drew on newspaper photographs, racing imagery, and popular culture, reducing their subjects to flat shapes and sharply separated areas of color. After moving to New York, he became closely involved with the American Pop Art scene and later shifted toward streamlined abstract sculpture. Laing returned to Scotland in 1969, restored Kinkell Castle, and established a bronze foundry there. His later work included portrait sculpture and a renewed engagement with contemporary political imagery. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art and the National Galleries of Scotland.

Pile (also catalogued as Gold Spin [Pile]), 1965, lithograph from stone in metallic gold ink on natural Nacre paper, printed by Kenneth Tyler and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles. Laing arranged a descending column of broad, interlocking curves that narrows into a fragmented profile near the lower edge, allowing the fibrous white paper to define the image through negative space. Inscribed in graphite lower left “Tam Imp. 1965” and signed lower right “Gerald Laing,” with Tamarind and Tyler blindstamps lower left. This is one of nine Tamarind impressions aside from the numbered edition of 20. Sheet measures approximately 30.25 × 22.5 inches. The sheet shows light handling with soft creasing and minor edge irregularities; image presents well.
