August 9, 1974, was an extraordinary moment in American history. Following Richard Nixon's resignation, Gerald R. Ford took the oath of office in the East Room of the White House, administered by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, becoming the 38th President of the United States. Ford remains the first person to assume the presidency after having been appointed, rather than elected, to the vice presidency.
