A monograph on the life and paintings of Dutch Golden Age painter Gerard Dou (1613-1675), illustrated with 247 black and white plates. It was the first catalogue raisonne of Gerard Dou paintings published in Germany in 1913. The text is in German, the plate descriptions are in English, German and French.

"Gerard Dou. Des Meisters Gemaelde in 247 Abbildungen", by W. Martin, published by Deutsche Verlags Anstalt, Stuttgart and Berlin, 1913, first edition, first printing. Published in the series Klassiker Der Kunst in Gesamtausgaben. It was the first ever series of artist monographs, the first attempted catalogues raisonne of famous master-painters of Renaissance and Baroque. Therefore these monographs have a high art-historiographic value.

Gerrit Dou (1613-1675), also known as Gerard and Douw or Dow, a student of Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders [fine paintings]. He specialized in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe l'oeil "niche" paintings and candlelit night-scenes with strong chiaroscuro.

Wilhelm Martin (1876-1954) was a German-Dutch art historian.

Wilhelm Martin was born in Quakenbruck, Germany as the son of Karl Martin, a geologist, and Ana Fittica. When his father became a professor at the University of Leiden in 1877, the family moved to the Netherlands. Wilhelm Martin studied Arts at the University of Leiden between 1894 and 1899. In 1901, he successfully defended his PhD dissertation on Dou's paintings. In 1907, Martin became extraordinary professor of art history at the University of Leiden. In 1909, Martin succeeded Bredius as the director of the Mauritshuis, which he remained for 36 years. He published a second book on Gerard Dou in 1912. In 1914-1915, he published a scientific catalogues of the Mauritshuis collection.
