Gerard Fortune "Tree Ceremony" (1925-2019) Haiti

Gerard Fortune "Tree Ceremony" (1925-2019) Acrylic on canvas, signed lower left, measures 30 x 40 inches unframed. Gerard began to paint in the early 1980's, in the small caille where he lives in Montagne Noir, above Petionville. Outside the house are scores of potted plants and trellises ( trelli?) blooming with beautiful flowers and a large bird house alive with white pigeons. He paints his wonderful paintings inside the hut, which has no electricity or running water. After sundown, he works by the light of a gas lantern. He is a true, self-taught painter. His work was featured in the May 1990 issue of Art & Antiques magazine and he is included in most recent books about Haitian Art.
Condition: The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact the auction house before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions.
