† Gerardo Rueda
(Spanish, 1926-1996)
"Untitled"
collage and mixed media on paper
pencil-signed lower right and marked "PA" lower left.
Matted, glazed and framed.
sight 15-3/4" x 12", framed 26-1/2" x 22-1/8"
Provenance: Estate of Charles Christopher Soufas, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Rueda was a co-founder of the influential Museo de Arte Abstracto Espanol, Cuenca. Initially trained in painting, he began experimenting with collage in 1953, combining pieces of cut or torn paper – including found materials such as tissue or discarded envelopes – into complex compositions. That same year he had his first major exhibition, and he would continue to exhibit regularly over the next several decades, most significantly at the Ateneo de Madrid, Musee d'Arts Decoratifs de Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Spanish Pavilion at the 1960 Venice Biennale.
Condition Report: Not examined out of frame. Overall, very good condition. Glazing is soiled and there are several organic accretions between glazing and paper. Frame with marks, nicks and abrasions.
