Took drawing lessons from painter W. L. Bruckmann (1866-1928) . He also attended evening school at the Hague Academy of Visual Arts. He had such a busy life, but was now sure that he wanted to continue in art. He also took lessons from painter W. B. Tholen (1860-1931) , who was himself a student of Paul J. C. Gabriel (1828-1903) .

In 1916 Gerben van Schagen held his first exhibition and went to live in Laren at Jagersweg 23. From now on he started working in various cities in the Netherlands. Including in Limburg, Zeeland, North Holland and Friesland. Later also in Belgium and France. His work became broader and freer and gradually more impressionistic in style.

In 1930 he had a major exhibition at Kleykamp in The Hague, where the Queen Mother purchased a painting from him.
Schagen also exhibited independently in Laren, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden, Groningen, Tilburg, Eindhoven, Breda, Almelo and Hengelo.

Schagen was a member of the association Arti et Amicitiae, St. Lucas, the Association for Visual Arts and the Gooische Schildersvereniging. Works by Gerben van Schagen are owned by Singer Laren and in the National Collection. Gerbrand Frederik van Schagen died on October 4, 1968 in Laren.

Work is incorrect and the frame is in impeccable condition, the frame is also included free of charge with the work.
