Gerhard Arij Ludwig Morgenstjerne Munthe (German/Dutch, 1875-1927)

Katwijk beach with sailboat and onlooker, 1914. Oil on canvas, signed "G. M. Munthe" and dated "14" lower left, framed in a wood carved and painted period frame with shell motif made by The Sala Bros. of Leiden, overall 26 ½" x 30 ½". Provenance: Acquired in Amsterdam by L'eau du Art Gallery of Nijmegen, Netherlands; purchased by currnet owner from L'eau du Art Gallery in June, 2009.

Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, Morgenstjerne attended the Art School in Dusseldorf, where he lived until 1897. At that time, he moved to the Netherlands and studied at The Hague, Katwijk, Zierkzee, and Noordwijker-hout. His studies in the Netherlands helped him to develop his favored style. Cool, muted tones and thick, luscious brushstrokes characterize his paintings, which usually show beach views and marines, fishermen and fishing boats.

Morgenstjerne Munthe has had exhibitions in Arnhem, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Leeuwarden and has works in many private collections.

Condition: Canvas has been relined, inpainting around perimeter of painting seen under UV light, visible stretcher bar lines; painting has been cleaned and re-varnished and tacking margins conserved by Great Lakes Art Conservation, Ltd. in March, 2010. Minor fissures and losses to frame.
