Gerhard Jan Palthe, Dutch 1681-1767- An interior with two girls and a dog; oil on panel, signed 'J. Palthe' and dated '1752' (lower right), 90.5 x 67.3 cm. (VAT charged on hammer price). Note: Born in the Dutch town of Denekamp, Palthe studied with Juriaen Pool the Younger (the husband of renowned still life painter Rachel Ruysch, 1665-1745) and Gerrit Dou (1613-1675). He worked for a while in Amsterdam, then in Denekamp, and finally settled in Deventer. He was influenced by the Dutch genre and portrait painter Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706) and is particularly celebrated for both his portraits and his scenes by candlelight – see, for example, his arresting portrait of Hillegardus Pieter Wierts held by the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam [no.0169], and his ‘Young Cartoonist’, by candlelight in the Prado Museum, Madrid [P002127].
