This Bible represents the most comprehensive collection of German Renaissance woodcuts possible. There are a few illustrations apparently by Martin Schongauer and Lucas Cranach [unsigned]; the Holbein's Bible illustration series seems to be complete. In addition, several unmarked illustrations in Holbein style. Albrecht Durer is represented with a great selection of the 'Big & Small Passions', some works from the "Life of Virgin," 4 engravings from the Duerer's Apocalypse Series ("Vision of Seven Lustares").

One picture is signed 'HM 56' which is marking by Hans Muelich/ Mielich (Munich 1516-1573); one woodcut is marked with joined 'AB' the marking of Barthel Bruyn-? (1493-1555), over 30 woodcuts signed with joined 'OT' (?), also some plates are marked with joined 'TS' which were probably created by Tobias Stimmer (1539-1584); All together there are 327 woodcuts.

All of the pictures are probably re-cuts created for this Bible, some compositions are inverted from the originals. Several of the woodcuts reproduced in this Bible have artist's initials omitted, Durer's usual marking 'AD' is also not present.

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543). Born in Augsburg, Bavaria, Hans received his first lessons in art from his father. In 1515 the younger Holbein went to Basel, Switzerland,. Among the many scholars living in Basel at that time was the famous Dutch humanist Erasmus,.. Holbein also illustrated other books, including Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible. In addition he painted pictures and portraits and, like his father, designed stained-glass windows. He also created designs for a series of 41 woodcuts called The Dance of Death.

Albrecht Duerer (1471-1528) is the greatest exponent of Northern European Renaissance art. While an important painter, in his own day Duerer was renowned foremost for his graphic works. Artists across Europe admired and copied Durer's innovative and powerful prints, ranging from religious and mythological scenes, to maps and exotic animals.

Martin Schongauer (c. 1450/53 -1491) was an Alsatian engraver and painter. He was the most important printmaker north of the Alps before Albrecht Durer, a younger artist who collected his work. Schongauer is the first German painter to be a significant engraver, although he seems to have had the family background and training in goldsmithing which was usual for early engravers. The bulk of Schongauer's surviving production is 116 engravings, all with his monogram but none dated, which were well known not only in Germany, but also in Italy and even made their way to England and Spain. Vasari says that Michelangelo copied one of his engravings, in the Trial of Saint Anthony. His style shows no trace of Italian influence, but a very clear and organized Gothic, which draws from both German and Early Netherlandish painting.
