German Mixed Media Collage Hannelore Baron

An abstract collage mixed media work by German / American artist Hannelore Baron (1926-1987). From the Hannelore Baron website, ‘(she) was an artist whose work has become known for the highly personal, abstract collages’. She and her family fled Nazi Germany in 1939, illegally crossing the border into Luxembourg. 1941 she and her family sailed from Lisbon and settled in the Bronx, New York City. Baron describes her work, ‘Everything I’ve done is a statement on the, as they say, human condition... the way other people march to Washington, or set themselves on fire, or write protest letters, or go to assassinate someone. Well, I’ve had all the same feelings that these same feelings that these people had about various things, and my way out, because of my inability to do anything else for various reasons, has been to make the protest through my artwork.’ Her work can be found in the SFMoMA, the Guggenheim, the LACMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the MFA Boston, the MoMA among many others. This work was framed by Bark Frameworks / Dennis Florio. The overall measurements are approximately 11.5 inches wide by 14.5 inches tall by 1 inch deep. The work is titled Envelope, it is signed Hannelore Baron and dated 1985. The work itself measures approximately 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall. 20
