Property from Ollerton Grange: an Interior by Robert Kime

German School, 1593
A pair of portraits of Hans von Kading zu Schönhöring and Reichersdorff (1535–1610) and his wife, Anna Maria von Puech zu Thurn und Erlbach (1558–1604)

one inscribed and dated upper right: 1 • 5 • 93 • / HANNS KHADINGER / ZV SCHENERING, / VÑD REISSTORF, / ÆTAT: SVÆ, / 39 •
the other inscribed and dated upper left: 1 • 5 • 93. / ANNA MARIA KHA / DINGERIN, GEB: / BVECHERIN. ÆT: / SVÆ, 35 •
a pair, both oil on canvas
one unframed: 79 x 58.4 cm.; 31⅛ x 23 in.
framed: 90.8 x 70.3 cm.; 35¾ x 27⅝ in.
the other unframed: 79.2 x 58.8 cm.; 31⅛ x 23⅛ in.
framed: 90.7 x 70 cm.; 35¾ x 27½ in.
(2)

Condition Report:
Both canvases appear to be unlined. The paint surfaces are clean and the varnishes are clear and relatively even. Old stretcher bar marks can be noted close to all four margins of each picture, though these are not too distracting. No paint losses can be noted throughout either composition. A small white drip mark can be found towards the lower left corner of the painting depicting the male figure, but this is very small, measuring approximately only 1 cm. in length and a couple of mm. in terms of width. A few retouchings are visible to the naked eye: in the portrait of the male figure, these can be found in the lower right corner, and in the portrait of the female, in the background on the left, beneath the inscription. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a handful of other retouchings scattered throughout each composition: on the male portrait these are found primarily in the pink curtain in the upper left corner, in the background above the sitter’s head, and on his ruff, while on the female portrait these are concentrated in the equivalent pink curtain in the upper right corner and on the lady’s left sleeve. Overall, both paintings are in very good condition. They present well and are ready to hang.

Catalogue Note:
Hans and Anna Maria were Bavarian nobility, having descended from the Eckher von Kapfing und Lichteneck family.
