German School, 18th Century- Portrait of a boy, traditionally identified as Ernst Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1771-1851), half-length turned to the left wearing a white shirt with a blue ribbon; oil on canvas, held in a gilded composition frame with spandrels and oval aperture, the frame bearing stamped cipher and no. 'M202' and applied paper label, 53 x 45.6 cm. Provenance: Sotheby’s, Royal House of Hanover, Munich, 5-15 October 2005, lot 5070. Note: Ernst Augustus was the fifth son of George III, and spent his childhood at Kew before following a military career serving in the English and Hanoverian armies during the war with France. On the death of his brother William IV, in 1837, he inherited the Hanoverian throne. He was succeeded by his son George V.
